What is TMJ disorder?

Temporomandibular joint disorder (TMJ) is a condition that affects the jaw joint. This joint connects your lower jawbone to your skull, allowing you to perform essential functions like chewing, speaking, and yawning. When this joint becomes inflamed or misaligned, it can lead to a range of symptoms, including jaw pain, headaches, clicking or popping sounds when opening or closing your mouth, difficulty chewing, and even earaches.

If you are suffering from any of these conditions, please get in touch to book a consultation.

What is involved in the treatment?

When used for TMJ, muscle-relaxing injections are typically administered directly into the jaw muscles to alleviate tension and reduce muscle spasms. By relaxing these muscles, the intensity of jaw clenching or grinding is diminished, subsequently lessening the associated pain and discomfort.

The effects of muscle-relaxing injections for TMJ are temporary, usually lasting for a few months, after which further injections may be required for sustained relief. While it’s not a permanent solution, it can offer significant relief for those struggling with TMJ issues, allowing them to experience reduced pain and improved jaw function.

Here at Kent House Dental Clinic, we are offering consultations with Dr Dipen Patel. If you are experiencing any jaw problems, why not come in and see us?

Is muscle-relaxing treatment for TMJ safe and effective?

Botulinum toxin has been used for years to treat a variety of medical conditions, including TMJ disorder. When administered by a qualified healthcare professional, it is generally considered safe and effective. Potential side effects are minimal and usually temporary, such as mild bruising or discomfort at the injection site.

How long do the effects last for TMJ treatment?

The effects of muscle-relaxing treatment for TMJ treatment typically last for 3-4 months. After this time, the muscles will gradually regain their function, and you may need additional injections to maintain the benefits. The frequency of treatments can vary depending on individual needs and response to the therapy.
