Fixed braces are a very well-established teeth straightening method, offering predictable and reliable results. They consist of brackets permanently bonded to the surface of your teeth for the duration of your treatment, with a thin wire threaded through to gently and accurately move your teeth into straighter positions.
Your fixed braces can be made from traditional metal or from tooth-coloured ceramic for a more discreet option. One of the main advantages of this orthodontic treatment is that your brace is always attached to your teeth and your treatment is constantly progressing towards your straight smile. Fixed braces also can’t get lost or damaged in the same way as removable braces. We offer a range of fixed brace options, including lingual braces that are fixed to the back surface of your teeth.
Initially, we ensure your teeth and gums are healthy, with no decay present. We ask you about your ideal results and discuss the treatment process with you, including the different brace options. We take X-rays and photographs of your teeth to accurately plan your treatment and ensure predictable results. We may need to remove some of your teeth to make space if they are crowded, so we carry out this extraction before your brace is fitted.
Around a week before your fixed braces are fitted, we place separators (small plastic ‘doughnuts’) between your molar teeth to create space for the molar bands. At your fitting appointment, we carefully bond the brackets to your teeth using strong dental cement and thread the thin wire through. During your treatment, we see you every 4-8 weeks for a check-up appointment, making necessary adjustments for excellent results.
When your treatment is complete, we love revealing your new smile! We debond your brackets from the surface of your teeth and give them a polish to ensure all traces of cement are removed. We create custom-made retainers using digital scans, which are needed to keep your teeth in their new straight positions.
There are so many reasons to choose Kent House Dental Clinic for your fixed braces:
Your speech is usually not affected at all by regular fixed braces. You may notice a slight lisp at first, but this will fade after a few days. If your condition requires a palatal expander appliance to be fitted at the roof of your mouth, this may interfere with your speech. Also, if you have lingual braces fitted, it will likely take some time for you to get used to speaking properly again.
It is very important to continue brushing your teeth and maintain excellent oral hygiene when you have fixed braces fitted. It will take longer than usual, as your teeth will be more difficult to clean effectively. Brush your teeth after every snack and meal, as well as your regular morning and evening routine, to reduce your risk of decay and gum disease. You will also need to use interdental brushes to reach the areas between your brackets. You will likely need to replace your toothbrush more often as it will wear out faster.
Eating hard food or biting on large pieces of food may dislodge your brackets or bands or damage the wire, so take time to cut up your food into more manageable portions. We also recommend you avoid consuming food and drinks with a high sugar content as these can compromise your oral health during brace treatment.
If you play a musical instrument with a mouthpiece, it will take you one to two weeks to get used to playing with your brace in before you become as skilful as before.
Retainers are seen as the final stage in all orthodontic treatment, and are a very important part of the process. Your retainer is custom-made for you and needs to be worn to keep your teeth in their new straight positions. We advise that you wear your retainer overnight for the long term.
