What is sedation?

Many people feel nervous or worried about going to the dentist, but for some this develops into full dental anxiety, stopping them from accessing important treatment and care. Whatever the reason for dental anxiety, from fear of potential pain to negative past experiences, dental sedation offers a safe and effective way to help you feel relaxed and ready for treatment.

Sedation has a calming effect, making you feel drowsy and more able to accept treatment. You remain awake throughout, and able to communicate, although you will be unaware of your dental treatment and unlikely to remember it once the sedation has worn off. We offer two types of sedation, intravenous and inhalation, which are carefully tailored to your individual needs.

Types of sedation treatment available

Intravenous (IV) sedation

IV sedation is the more popular method, and a very effective way to treat the most nervous of dental patients. It is administered via an injection in the back of your hand, with the levels of sedation given monitored closely throughout your treatment. IV sedation takes time to wear off, and you won’t be able to drive, drink alcohol or work machinery during recovery. You will need someone to accompany you to the clinic, take you home after treatment and keep an eye on you until the effects of the sedation wear off.

Inhalation sedation

Relative analgesia, also known as inhalation sedation, is a mixture of nitrous oxide and oxygen. It is administered via a comfortable nosepiece, and as you breathe it in it quickly gives you a pleasant and relaxed feeling, putting you more at ease. After your treatment, just one or two breaths of ordinary air makes the sedative leave your body, and there are no after-effects to worry about. You can return to your normal routines, including driving, around 15 minutes after treatment.

Is sedation safe?

Sedation is completely safe when administered and monitored by a fully trained and qualified professional dentist. We are very experienced and trained in sedation treatment and prioritise safety. We discuss the procedure with you beforehand, making sure you understand what will be happening and how you will feel.

Will I ever feel differently about visiting the dentist?

It is highly likely that as you get to know your dentist and other members of the dental practice team, you will begin to feel more comfortable about visiting for your regular appointments. We are empathetic, understanding and gentle, giving you the time you need to feel more at ease in our care, using sedation if necessary. Over time, your fears will dampen and you will come to see your regular visit to the dentist as just another part of your normal life.

Do I still need anaesthetic if I have sedation?

Sedation doesn’t numb your mouth, so local anaesthetic will still be needed to minimise any pain during treatment. However, we do not administer the anaesthetic until after the sedation has taken effect, meaning you will not be fully aware of it and will not remember the anaesthetic injection taking place.

Will I be able to talk when under sedation?

Yes, you remain awake when sedated and are still able to communicate. You will be able to answer questions and talk to your dentist, but will likely not remember these conversations once the sedation has worn off.

Can I ask for sedation for my dental treatment?

If you feel that you would benefit from sedation for your dental treatment, or to help you overcome your dental anxiety, please talk to us. We are happy to discuss your suitability for sedation and how it could help you.
