What’s involved in having a filling?

The area to be treated is numbed with a local anaesthetic and the decayed part of the tooth is removed with special dental tools.

A base or liner may be placed in the tooth to prevent sensitivity following the procedure. The amalgam is mixed and then placed in the tooth. It is tightly compacted to ensure every part of the cavity is filled.

Your amalgam filling is then shaped to resemble the tooth and, if necessary, it is smoothed down so it feels comfortable. We may ask you to bite down and run your tongue over the tooth to check it will not cause you any issues.

Get in touch

Are amalgam fillings safe?

Yes, amalgam fillings have been used in dentistry for over 150 years and are considered safe by reputable health organisations, including the World Health Organisation (WHO). It's essential to discuss any concerns with your dentist to make an informed decision based on your specific health needs.

Do amalgam fillings contain mercury, and is it harmful?

Yes, amalgam fillings contain a small amount of mercury. However, the mercury in amalgam is bound with other metals, creating a stable compound that is generally considered safe for dental use. Numerous scientific studies have shown that the levels of mercury released from amalgam fillings are well below the threshold for causing harm.

Can I have amalgam fillings removed if I am concerned about mercury exposure?

Yes, it is possible to have amalgam fillings removed and replaced with alternative materials, such as composite. However, it's crucial to consult with your dentist before making any decisions. Your dentist will discuss the potential risks and benefits and help you make an informed choice based on your health circumstances.

Do amalgam fillings require special care or maintenance?

Amalgam fillings do not require special care beyond regular oral hygiene practices. It is essential to brush and floss daily, maintain a healthy diet, and attend regular dental check-ups. Your dentist will monitor the condition of your fillings during routine visits. If any issues are detected, they can address them promptly to ensure the continued effectiveness of the fillings in protecting your teeth.
