What are dental implants?

Dental implants are a well-established, innovative, strong and highly aesthetic way to replace missing teeth. A truly advanced dental restoration, the titanium implant post is inserted into your jaw bone to support a natural-looking crown or bridge fitted on top. The implant exactly mimics your natural tooth root, and fuses with your bone over time to become a very solid and durable foundation.

Dental implants can significantly improve your quality of life, as securely supported teeth make it much easier to talk and eat. Implants enhance your appearance and boost your confidence, giving you a reason to show off your new winning smile.

Consultation & planning

1

Consultation & planning

To begin your dental implant treatment, we see you for a consultation appointment. We discuss the procedure with you and let you know all the possibilities for your particular case, including your suitability for dental implants. We will take digital X-rays to help with our accurate planning for the placement of your implant. We also give you the chance to ask us any questions.

Fitting your implant

2

Fitting your implant

Your dental implant is placed into your jaw by our skilled and experienced implant dentist, using local anaesthetic to ensure your comfort. You can also opt to have sedation for this procedure if you prefer. When your implant is in place, we stitch your gum so it heals over the implant. It takes several months for your implant to heal and integrate with your bone successfully, so we place a temporary tooth during this period.

Your newly restored smile

Your newly restored smile

When your implant has fully healed and fused with your jaw bone, we can fit your final replacement tooth on top. We take accurate scans to ensure your crown or bridge is custom made to your exact specifications and fits seamlessly into your smile.

How long does dental implant treatment take?

Dental implant treatment can take several months, but most of this is due to the healing time needed once your implant has been fitted. The implant surgery itself is relatively short, but in most cases several months are needed for healing.

Who is suitable for dental implants?

Most people are suitable for dental implants, as long as they are in good oral health and are generally healthy too. Some patients may need a bone graft or sinus lift to ensure a successful outcome, but this will be discussed with you. We can assess your suitability for implant treatment at your first appointment.

Is having a dental implant fitted painful?

We use local anaesthetic during your implant surgery to minimise your discomfort, so it won’t be painful. We can also use sedation if you are feeling particularly nervous or worried about the treatment. Most people compare having an implant fitted to a tooth extraction, and often comment that implant surgery is less painful.

Are there any alternatives to dental implants?

The alternatives to dental implants for replacing missing teeth are bridges and dentures. These options are more affordable than an implant, but don’t have the same incredible aesthetics, stability and durability. We are happy to help you find the best restorative treatment for you.

Will I find it hard to talk with tooth implants?

It is more likely that you will find it easier to talk once you have an implant fitted. The implant is fused to your jawbone, giving full support for your replacement tooth, so you don’t have to worry about any moving or slipping while you talk. Your speech may also become clearer when you no longer have a large gap in your teeth.

How do I clean my dental implants?

To keep your dental implants clean, simply treat them exactly like natural teeth. Include your implant and the replacement tooth on top in your everyday oral hygiene routine, and pay close attention to brushing your gum to keep your mouth healthy and problem-free.
